The women’s 2s travelled for an important fixture to face Leek away with a small (but mighty) squad.
Telford dominated for much of the first half and did everything but put the ball in the net. They played constructive and dynamic hockey pushing forward and defending well.
Leek had phases of play where they were assertive and controlled the game through the middle, putting our defence under pressure and forcing Emma Arundell to make some fantastic saves, which kept Telford in the game.
Leek continued to push but were unable to score and Telford were dangerous on the counter attack with numerous chances denied by the Leek keeper.
Unfortunately Telford did go to 10 for 2 minutes due to a green card, given for ‘descent through body language’. (Is anyone reading old enough to remember Kevin and Perry?).
Half time came and still at 0-0 both teams were prepared to put up a good fight for the 3 points. A small adjustment to positional play changed the game to Telford’s advantage. Telford got ahead on the break and Bella hit the ball on the bobble for Eliza to sweep the ball through the keeper to score a vital goal, 23 minutes into second half.
It was then a case of game management for Telford who stuck together, focused on maintaining possession, supported each other and defended assertively to go home with 3 points.
The world was put to rights back at leek’s clubhouse over a jacket potato and a sing song (happy birthday to one of the leek players). Some of the W2s stayed on (after picking up some supplies at Asda) to support the Telford mens 1 who played at leek later in the afternoon.
Every player on the pitch gave their all today with Player of the match awarded to Emma Arundell.
