The Men's 1's travelled to Olton on one of the hottest Saturday's of the year so far! Expecting to play on a top quality pitch at National League side Olton, they turned up to what can only be described as a beach, putting the old St George's pitch to shame.
The lads battled hard in the 1st quarter with little reward but a well worked penalty corner routine resulted in a penalty stroke for Olton which was dispatched to make it 1-0. Telford continued to graft in the 2nd quarter but again failed to test the Olton goalkeeper, and found themselves 2-0 down at HT.
The 3rd and 4th quarters saw Telford enjoy more of the ball and efforts on goal. Sam Pratt forced a save from the Olton keeper and Tom Gough saw his effort just wide of the far post. Some calamitous umpiring saw Olton go 3-0 up after both sides had stopped due to several clear fouls by both sides, but the umpire failed to act and Olton seized the opportunity. Olton went 4-0 up following an unfortunate touch from a Telford defender after the initial Olton shot was heading wide of the goal.
Cal Stacey scored a consolation goal for Telford after the skipper won a penalty corner with 5 minutes to play. The post man was left running for cover despite Stacey unleashing the slower slower ball which found the middle right hand side of the goal.
The game finished 4-1 but with Telford claiming the old fashioned playground rule 'last goal wins!'
A superb effort by the lads who were missing forwards Tom Mallett and DT, facing opposition two leagues above them in the sweltering heat! Credit must go to Neil Davies who made several fine saves in between the sticks. Plenty of miles in the legs before their final friendly on Saturday 9th against Bournville.
