Telford & Wrekin Hockey Club is marking a significant milestone this week: the one-year anniversary of its free Walking Hockey sessions, held in partnership with Telford & Wrekin Council. Over the past year, the initiative has introduced countless individuals to the joys of hockey in a fun, friendly, and accessible way.
Every Tuesday afternoon, participants of all abilities – from complete beginners to those returning to the sport after many years – gather at the club to enjoy the slower-paced, less physically demanding version of the game. The sessions are expertly coached by Annette Berg, who creates a welcoming atmosphere where everyone can feel comfortable giving it a go.
Walking Hockey is a fantastic way to stay active, socialize, and enjoy the thrill of the game without the high-impact running of traditional hockey. It’s proven particularly popular with those who may have stopped playing hockey due to age, injury, or other commitments, offering a chance to reconnect with the sport they love. It's also a perfect introduction for those who have never picked up a stick before.
"We're thrilled to celebrate the first anniversary of our Walking Hockey sessions," said Gwynne Goodfield, Club Chair. "It's been wonderful to see so many people discover or rediscover the joy of hockey. We're incredibly grateful to Telford & Wrekin Council for their support in making this initiative possible, and to Annette Berg for her fantastic coaching."
The club provides all the necessary equipment, including sticks, completely free of charge, removing any barriers to participation. The emphasis is firmly on fun and social interaction, with no pressure to compete.
"It's a great way to meet new people, get some exercise, and have a laugh," commented one regular participant. "I haven't played hockey since I was at school, but Walking Hockey has allowed me to get back into it at my own pace."
Telford & Wrekin Hockey Club encourages anyone interested in trying Walking Hockey to come along on Tuesday afternoons. Whether you’re a seasoned player looking for a gentler way to enjoy the sport, or someone completely new to hockey, you’re sure to receive a warm welcome. Just turn up and give it a go!
