The final day of the National League Division One season delivered a dramatic conclusion to the title race, with two former junior players from Telford & Wrekin Hockey Club finding themselves on opposite ends of the emotional spectrum.
Barney Bithell, whose Loughborough Students side had led the division for the majority of the season, experienced the bitter taste of defeat as they were ultimately pipped to the title by Brooklands Hockey Club, featuring fellow Telford & Wrekin alumnus Mikey Parham.
Having played a pivotal role in securing Bowdon HC's promotion into the Premier League the previous year while based in the North West, Barney was unable to replicate that success in his final season in the African Violet of Loughborough. Despite his significant contributions throughout the campaign, the title eluded their grasp in the final moments, conceding a 69th minute goal vs Durham University.
Conversely, Mikey celebrated the sweet taste of victory as Brooklands HC clinched the Division One title in a thrilling finale after they had beaten Nottingham University and leap frogged Loughborough on the final day. The club extends its congratulations to Mikey and Brooklands HC on their well-deserved promotion and wishes them the very best as they embark on their Premier Division journey next season. While commiserations go to Barney and Loughborough Students on their near miss, their strong season is a testament to their hard work and dedication.
Both Barney and Mikey were recognised as key players integral to their respective teams' achievements throughout the season, showcasing the talent nurtured within the Telford & Wrekin Hockey Club's junior ranks.
